The creator of this app is an education consultant with a background in mathematics, and we bet it must have been a lot of fun developing these apps (shedlings also created the Know your numbers 1 to 10 app).

In Counting 1 to 10, funny little creatures called shedlings are preparing for their birthday party, which involves things like putting candles on a cake by the baker, postcard deliveries and rewards for when the kids get the right answer, like a balloon to play with. 

The best thing about this app is that it's not simply helping kids to count, but also challenges the children to think for themselves. For instance, in one game kids first have to count the number of candles on the cake and then choose the birthday card with the correct number on it; this way, they will both practise counting itself and recognition of numerals. 

We think this app is probably one of the most fun ways you can teach children to count. The fact that it's not free is unfortunate of course, on the other hand there is also something to say for sparing a three year old constant exposure to advertising, while learning one of the most fundamental mathematical principles known to man.

There is a trial version of this app by the way (counting 1 to 10 trial) but it doesn't include all the numbers and the activities are also shorter.
